We have uploaded selection of marbled or brushed endpapers from the bindings of our Special Collections, spanning the 17th to 20th centuries. Paper marbling, in which coloured inks or pigments are floated or sprinkled on a liquid surface, produces patterns similar to marble or other kinds of stone. The floating colours can be carefully manipulated by blowing, fanning, or combing to create a number of styles or types such as Bouquet, Nonpareil, Stormont, Spanish and Turkish. These images have been made available under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA License, meaning you can download and re-use them in private, non-commercial research or projects.
